Prayer as we seek our pathway
My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always, though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
Thomas Merton
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Romans 12:2
Pray with God’s Call to People in the Bible
- Read about God’s conversation with Elijah: 1 Kings 19: 10 – 20
- Consider God’s call to the prophet Jonah: the Book of Jonah
- Ponder Jeremiah’s Sense of God’s Call: Jeremiah 1: 1 – 19 and throughout
- Pray with Jesus’ Mission Statement: Luke 4: 16 – 21
- Listen to Jesus’ call to his Disciples: Matthew 4: 9 or 8:22 or John 21:19
The place where God calls you is the place where your deep gladness and the deep hunger of the world meets.
Renowned Anglican Scholar Frederick Buechnerthe
In a world so torn apart by rivalry, anger, and hatred, we have the privileged vocation to be living signs of a love that can bridge all divisions and heal all wounds.
Henri Nouwen
Something powerful happens when we involve ourselves in the care of a person in need. The whole encounter pushes us to look at who we are, what we believe, why we are caregiving, and how the encounter is affecting us. Our doing mixes with our being and becoming.
Joan Guntzelman
